Hi Chaps,

We've just updated to 5.0.3 (8174) and noticed something strange. Someone replied to a two week old thread but their reply doesn't appear on the list of recent posts on the homepage widget.

The forum looks like this (the message is 'Message for Keith on Orange 5')

http://www.bigfootmbc.co.uk/fo.....yeti-chat/

But that message doesn't appear in the homepage widget here:

http://www.bigfootmbc.co.uk/

Any thoughts as to what might be happening? Have I missed a setting which keeps old threads 'old'?

Thanks,

Andrew.

Oh dear - this is one of those things that there is no ready answer for when you can see that something is wrong but you have no hope of explaining why!

Yes - I can clearly see the post should be at position 3 in the list and I can see no problem with the post, the topic or the forum. The thread date has no relevance - we actually use the post ID for sorting as this equates with the date of a post and is much quicker to select in the database.

So - I honestly do not know. I see the post in the quicklinks drop-down as expected but can see no underlying reason in the code why a simple post like that should get excluded.

Could I ask you to monitor the list to see of this is a regular issue? And if it happens again we will need to try and work out the significance of the posts being excluded. Without access to your database and a test system that is probably the best we can do at the moment. And I will keep an eye here as well as we use the widget in our footer.

Ahh, no problem - thanks for taking a look smile

I'll monitor the forum to see if we can spot it happening again and let you know...

Ahh, OK, we've spotted a patten now; on Sunday I updated the forum from 4.x to 4.5 and then to 5.x.

The problem we're having only applies to threads that were created before the update. So I if I reply to a thread that was last active before Sunday it won't appear in the recent threads on the homepage (although it appears in the forum OK).

All the threads we've created since Sunday are behaving normally and appearing on the homepage widget as normal...

If it's only applying to old threads then I'm not too worried as it will work its way out but I thought you would like to know anyway.

Thanks,

Andrew.

Oh well spotted Andrew. And while I will need to go off and check the code I think I might be able to explain that as well -but would never have thought about it otherwise.

If we do fix then I doubt you will get it before you have probably gone past the tome when it will matter but apologies all the same. And I will investigate.

No problem - as you say we'll not notice it soon as very few threads get resurrected in that way, but thanks for bearing in mind for the future smile

If you want to give something a try that I think might be the root of the problem the you could go to the forum admin > toolbox > housekeeping where you will find an option to Rebuild Indexes. You could rebuild the indexing for each forum to see f that resolves it. Your call - but unless your overall forum is huge it is quite a quick task.

Hi,

Thanks for the tip!

We have seen this issue recur now, this time with a thread that was created after the update. It's 'Who uses FeedMyInbox to get forum updates via email?' over here: http://www.bigfootmbc.co.uk/fo.....yeti-chat/

Which doesn't appear on the homepage widget: http://www.bigfootmbc.co.uk/

I've rebuilt the indexes for our main forum and updated to 5.0.4. which hasn't changed the thread on the homepage - thought I'd better let you know as you might be interested...

Thanks,

Andrew.

Is there any chance you could make a backup of your WP database right NOW and let me have a copy for testing?
I stress this would be only for trying to get to the bottom of this issue and the db would be deleted as soon as tests were done. I just think this might be the only way I can trace what is going on...
