number of forums shouldnt matter... there is certainly, much, much less data loaded there than on the front end... If it was choking from memory for loading those forums, it would be loading an order of magnitude or more data on the front end...
if you downgrade, you will lose data... but you will need the old version of simple press...
change the sfversion and sfbuild options in the database as before... they need to match the numbers in the sp-control.ph file in the older version... I often set sfStartUpgrade back to the last version too...
if you wanted to send us an temp wp admin account with full sp admin capabilities we could take a look... might need ftp access to in order to add some debug code, but can wait... if that works, be sure to pm the data to both mr papa AND yellow swordfish... unfortunately, I leave on a cruise tomorrow and will be gone for a bit over a week...

OK - afraid we have missed Steve who has left for a vacation! And I have no idea what he hoped to achieve with ftp. And, of course, I have already looked at the admin loading.
You seem to be running with a php memory of 512MB which should be more than enough - especially as I see you are running quite light on other plugins competing for resources.
However - I also can not help but noticing that the site tends to load really rather slowly so I think perhaps the next thing to look at would be the xmlHttpRequest keep-alive timeout value. Now I am treading into waters here that are way beyond my own knowledge and using Google to try and get help and advice but I think this should be the next step in the investigation.
I think you do need to take this to the hosting support to ask them if (a) the timeout on xmlHttpRequest might be responsible... and (b) if it can be lengthened even if only to test whether it helps.
Steve is right in that we are not really talking about huge volumes of data but there is quite a lot of processing of that data going on and the keep-alive timeout does look quite small to me.

I hope it's all right to join this discussion. I've just had a similar issue on my site.
Order Groups and Forums loaded fine initially, but when I tried loading some reordered forums they became totally out of kilter - sub-forums were listed as normal forums, some forums were empty with just sub-forums. Basically a complete mess.
I tried going back in to OG&F but it took ages to load. Eventually the admin page partially loaded, but had the error: Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /problem-with-post-edit-buttonome/bbfuture/public_html/wp/wp-content/plugins/simple-press/admin/panel-forums/forms/spa-forums-ordering-form.php on line 81
I'm rolling back to an earlier version using VaultPress. Hopefully that'll fix it. Any suggestions on how I can avoid this happening again would be welcome. My server has plenty of available RAM.
Thanks to the help of a user who let us look at his database we have now pinned this issue down and have what we hope is a fix currently in testing.
The problem seems to come about when the order groups/forums panel is used for the first time when the actual display sequence data held against the forums is basically corrupted. The annoying thing is that the new panel was designed to avoid potential corruptions in the sequence data but doesn't appear to handle existing corruptions properly. And for that we apologise but that was hard to test for as there can be so many different combinations.
We are pretty sure that if the sequence numbers (forum_seq) are corrected in the raw data before using the new panel then all is well. And we have re-written some of the code to help deal with this but, as I say, that is currently in testing. Manually correcting the sequence data using a tool like phpMyAdmin is possible but obviously not to be recommended for those with little or no experience of editing raw data tables.
Again we really do apologise for this. Let me know if you need any help as I am willing to try and correct your data if you wanted to send it to me.

Thanks for the info Andy. I'm in the middle of a VaultPress restore at the moment, so I don't think I need any help right now.
When (if?) everything's back to normal I'll probably try moving the forums one at a time, rather than batches all at once, but if I run into more problems I'll let you know. Is there an ETA for the fix?
There is no ETA yet I am afraid.
As so often happens we can be hamstrung by WordPress releases and sometimes the need to coincide with those. But we may put out an interim update - that is something that will need to be discussed when a few more testing cycles have been done.

OK, the restore worked OK, but when I re-tried to move a single forum it made everything haywire again - most sub-forums are now normal forums, and the whole structure's a bit of a mess.
My forum is here. The individual album forums (Please Please Me to Love) should be sub-forums of "The albums". There are also a couple of stray sub-forums (Forum Games and Heal/Hurt games) which should be part of All Together Now.
Unfortunately I can't get into the admin page again so can't do the cleanup myself. If you're able to help I'd appreciate it, either here or joe at beatlesbible dot com.
Oh dear. That sounds like you restored the DB and then went into the order forums panel again. As I said above - if the sequence was corrupted it will not work - and the sequence must have been corrupted forst time around.
I can fix things up for you but I will need a SQL dump file of your 'sfforums' table. Just the one table. Do you know how to do that using phpMyAdmin?
