Is it possible to tailor email notifications so that only the URL to the topic is included in the email - not the whole reply itself? Or just a snippet of the reply, possibly?

you can use a standard wp filter to remove the content if that is what you want... or perhaps just use the daily digest subscription notification... then they just get one email per day with only links to the topics...
