problem getting avatars to upload

Well - as I pointed out in my PM reply, the avatar image that you attached in your PM has a file size of 27489 bytes. But looking at your admin > profiles > avatar settings you haver a maximum upload file site of only 10240 bytes. So that particular image would get rejected.
