If you go back to the permissions and reads through the ‘viewing’ section you will see options to allow people to see a list of forums only – or – a list of forums and list of topics only. This sounds like what you want.

Further – if you then go to Components > Custom Messages – over on the right hand side of that panel you can create special messages that will be shown to people who have those restrictions set. We call it ‘sneak peek’. A good way of trying to encourage users to register and become fully fledged members.

Another question, if I use this option how does it affect Google SEO for the forum as I’ve noticed it was doing really well with the Google SEO so far?

All the forums pages that you could see as a guest will still be found by Google. The ones blocked would not be. If using the Sneak Peek deal then it will find the title of the post and any new pages created but not the content.
