I would like to have a widget on the side with a title like " reccomnded members to be friends with.....then maybe 3 or 4 members with an add button beside that...is there a way I can do that from simple press?

I think you are perhaps still a little confused about where Simple:Press sits in all of this. Simple:Press is just a plugin for WordPress. It is just a forum. There are thousands of other plugins for WordPress that do all kinds of interesting things and really for anything that is non-forum related or non-forum specific, then you should really be looking for other plugins.
Whether anything like you ask for exists I really have no idea but it's always worth a look - there is a surprising amount of stuff out there and some of t is really pretty good/
