RE: Attachment listing duplication attempt.
Okay, so I attempted this again in my test post thread and it looks like I cannot presently replicate it, which is good. I wonder why it happened those couple of times over the past month or so. Hmm...
RE: Page load times.
In the 5-6yrs I've had the site, it's always been somewhat slow. This background was added just a week or so ago so I can't say that it's had any affect on page speeds. I did, however, just lower the resolution, which reduced the file size by half (around 600k).
As for limiting upload sizes, what's a good limitation (i.e., what's the SP support forum limitation?) and how can I change the upload parameters in the dashboard?

You set them in the components > uploads admin panel. These settings are really subjective and need to be set as you need them. Ours are probably set smaller than most as being a support site we don't want big images being posted.
If you are allowing people to post over-large images that then have to be scaled down by the browser then that really is going to hot performance and cost you expensive bandwidth every time it is loaded. Same goes for this background image on the theme. If Mr Papa was right and it was a megabyte then it explains why it was slow for me as being a developer I often run with by browser cache turned off. Actually even with it on I hope it would have rejected an image that size!
