Effective immediately for the 5.0 alpha, you will be able to use the built in wp updater for updating simple press core, plugins and themes...  its one of our new features for 5.0... update the plugin and its plugins/themes just like you would update WordPress and some of its plugins and themes...

That said, if you are running the 5.0 alpha out of svn, you will NOT want to use the built in updater as it can cause issues with your svn stuff...

So if you want to switch to the updater, I would suggest deleting your svn checked out files and instead do an svn export to get it one time... from then on, you can use the updater.

I need to say that we will not be updating the archives for the updater every day...  the updates will be more like weekly...

but if you dont have svn or dont like svn, its a way to participate in the alpha - just with a bit less frequent updates...

tomorrow, we also will debut a nightly build archive to further help those that cant or dont want to use svn...  if I ever get some free time, lolololol, I may try write a small plugin that will allow the nightly update archive to be applied within the updater, or automate a cron job to make the internal updater use the nightly..

I "was" working on a plugin to update svn code but chickened out when discovering I would need to give some options. I didn't want to waste time on a plugin that would be so short lived.

it would be something similar to Westi's beta tester plugin... lets you apply nightly updates as if it was the wp updater archive... but guessing I wont have time...

svn, nightly zip file or wp updater should be sufficient wink

I tried to upgrade for the first time from the WP dashboard and it has effectively trashed my site. If I try to access anything at all on the site now,  I get the following.

Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_create_nonce() in /problem-with-post-edit-buttonome/gruzcom1/public_html/ABF_Test/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins/private-messaging/sp-pm-plugin.php on line 27

I can no longer use svn as the UUID's don't match so I guess that I have no choice other than to reinstall the lot. I don't know why this happened but it happened after I preformed the upgrade from the simple press admin panel.

So I suppose that I will have to reinstall the lot. You need to make this more robust, if something goes wrong it should never trash a site like it has mine.

Actually this is still beta.
In this case - and it was unavoidable - you also need to update the PM plugin. Also available from the updater.

Yes fixed it by replacing the plugin. I realise that it is beta but I still feel that it was worth mentioning.

unfortunately, the wp updater does not currently allow for inter-dependencies... there is talk by core devs of adding it... but until then, kind of stuck between rock and hard place...  once released, backwards compat will trump a lot of changes...

Ah I see what the problem is now. Yes that is a tricky one. You separate out the various plugins, themes etc to make the core small enough to use the wp updater but it knows nothing about the plugins. I'm going back to SVN using ssh, see my other post.

svn is simpler if you have it on your server...  PITA though if you svn up locally and then upload... just better to use the updater... just a couple clicks...

Just a quick note. We did a new install on this a few days ago.  The 5.0 is great. I love the idea of an updater built in.

It has one small snag.  It seemed to complete the update, and then had an issue with doing some kind of update to the database.  It was on a Wordpress Multisite with Buddypress.  The warning said: "You do not have sufficient permissions."

Update seemed to be fine. It shows the new version. It works.

We liked the "fools gold" theme so much, we changed site colors to work it in to the overall layout - making the newer site match your them.

We have a three year old install I plan to convert over soon on another site.

Thanks!
