Update on issse: (resolved i think)

I auto updated a wordpress plugin : wordpress https

this forced the admin area to be viewed over https and I'm assuming that this effected some of the XMLheaderrequests as they reside on http  hence the denial of access.

it would also explain why the help tips were not displaying (empty box appeard) the content being served into the box was on http and not https so it again was denied access.

as soon as i adjusted the plugin settings so admin is http the sp-admin area went back to functioning normally.

Thanks again for all your help as with out it I wouldn't have know to look at the https stuff.
