Hey Doug,
Because the forum dynamically functions on one WordPress page, it can't be cached. You will probably start to notice other problems such as incorrect timestamps and post counts..
Basically, you can run caching, but you will need to exclude the forum page from WP Total Cache (w3?)

You should be able to exclude a page for every module, according to this article, you have the option to "prevent caching of objects" under the 'browser cache' section.
Unless that article is outdated of course - I have never used W3 Total Cache but I know a large amount of users have and still do use it alongside SP with no issue once properly set up.
