Hi Guys..
I decided to upgrade to a dedicated server from Host Gator. To make a long story short, all the WP plugins are causing fatal memory allocation errors. Host Gator is blaming it on Simple Press which i already know is BS!
This is the email they sent me.. Good for a few laughs i guess!
This appears to be an issue with Simple Press plugin and not necessarily the server. I've put in a simple php script that tests memory limit, here: http://www.fidosysop.org/sitef.....emtest.php this shows the php memory_limit is set to 256MB, however that particular plugin is limiting its self to 32 MB. If you like we can disable the Simple Press plugin from loading if you like.
I thought HG was a good hosting company.

and they must not know much about WP either... since WP tries to allocate 256MB of memory for many portions of the WP admin too...

I think he wants you to fix it for him. LOL!
Ed,
Let us know if the developers/community at the Simple Press forum offer any suggestions with regard to server configuration changes/improvements to help resolve the issue. We are looking forward to your response so that we may resolve this issue for you.

Another quick question.
Is it normal to have a php.ini file in the hosting acct public_html folder? Never had one before on the shared hosting accounts i have had.
I'm kind of a newbie to servers and WHM panel, but not to cPanel. I set up the account for fidosysop.org on the server, gave it all available resources. One of the many techs i have spoke to said i was missing that file and he added it to give the acct 256k memory. Sounds like a mickey-mouse work around to me.
It's gotten worse and now i cant even log into WordPress. Pretty bad a dedicated sever cant even run a single WordPress site without puking all over itself.
And of course it's always easiest to pass the buck and blame the problem on the clients configuration.

Not unusual at all. That's where mine is on one of my vps sites. You will probably find the error.log file for it there too. If so I would take a look at it. If there is to much info in it just delete it and try accessing the site a few times or a few different ways and see if it comes back and what it says.
unfortunately not unusual for shared hosts... you went from dedicated to shared hosting? ouch..

I think Steve missed the point that this was actually a move TO a dedicated server!
What he didn't tell you is that this site runs on a Hostgator VPS.
I am puzzled by this statement 'that particular plugin is limiting its self to 32 MB''. Can you ask them how and where? The only reference we make in SP code to memory is an attempt to set it to at least 64MB if we find that the current allocation is below that. As Steve pointed out - WordPress does the same thing in some areas of the admin. So knowing just what they are referring to would be helpful.

Mornin, Andy..
It's down hard this morning. Web and Mail servers down, even cPanel is down. I wanted to try again to dump my database but can't even get into cPanel. Tried that last night but the dl of a 36mb zipped sql would have taken over an hour to download. That server must be a total POS! And for $174 month i don't think so!
I have always had a shared account, my site and a few clients as add on domains, and all was well. The last 5 clients i have built sites for, i had them set up a hosting account on HG and i transferred there site to there hosting acct after i finished it. So i figured i would step up to a dedicated server and just sell the hosting myself. That was the plan anyway.
It's not only SimplePress. It's many other plugins that cause a fatal error when trying to log into wp. Sometimes on the main site page. Example below. Note this is one error from sp, there are others i made screen video out of but didn't screen snapshot.
Other plugins that are giving the same error are WP popular posts, and simple twitter status.
Never in all my many sites built with WordPress have i encountered this error. It's just easier to pass the buck than fix the problem at hand.
It puked trying to download last nights database dump.
I think they are FOS! Tell me a Dedicated $174 month dedicated server can't run ONE loaded up WordPress site.

I just called them again, about the 10th time. This time Allen told me i needed to fill out a form to have the server rebooted, and that is not his responsibility. He finally agreed to do it himself. I told him i was recording the conversation and was going to pod cast it. He laughed at that statement.
Anyway it was rebooted and i was able to export the database. Going to move my name servers back to the shared account and be done with it.
Allen was laughing about the fact it couldn't be a problem with their hardware. I'm gonna blow there ass out of the water with some real damaging PR!
I never get mad, I get even! They wasted my time and got my blood pressure so high my head feels like it's gonna pop any minute!
Mess with the Old FidoSysop!
