Would you mind explaining to me what you mean by it being much more basic..? less features or..? Would you recommend Simple Press for a beginner?

It depends what you want. bbPress is more like an older style bulletin board. It is fast and painless but not very fully featured. It is 'basic' in that respect.

SP is based more upon a more traditional and feature rich forum application. You may end up having to put a little more effort into SP (depending on if you want to make changes or not) but we hope we offer a more full-forum style experience.
