Support Forum
Hi guys, we currently use Wishlist Member integrated with PayPal to take payments for an upgrade to a higher permission level on our Simplepress forum. Wishlist also protects other content/pages on our site.
I'm very happy with Simplepress but am thinking about changing the others. We have a lot of business clients, and PayPal cannot manage various VAT issues well for subscription payments. We've also had some problems marrying up Wishlist level with Simplepress role and permissions.
Could you tell me what you use here in terms of a content protection plugin. Do you have a member plugin of some kind? I think you use PayPal for payments, is that right??
I'm also thinking about changing our free and paid forum permission levels to something like you have - a non-members area and paid support - I think this is a much clearer split for all concerned. At the moment, we have free and paid support levels but access and permissions are in fact the same. We differ by response time and difficulty of the technical support required. Hard to manage and know where the cut off between the two is.
Anyway, going off a bit there, would really appreciate knowing how you are set up.
Thanks, Stefan
We too started out with WishList and my colleague, @mr-papa could give you a full reason why we changed as it was his call, but I know I found it somewhat cumbersome, unforgiving and difficult to correct the mistakes it sometimes seemed to make. we have moved to Restrict Content Pro and I have to say things seem to have been a lot smoother since then. Plus we no longer need to have the extra plugin to handle the interface between WP roles and SP User Groups. RCP handles both memberships and content management. Changes get reflected as you would expect.
I have often thought I would like to have more options than just Paypal but to be frank, we do not earn enough to make it worthwhile. As far as I am aware, RCP will handle VAT properly but you would need to check that.
Good luck with all this - I hope it goes well no matter what you choose. Just remember that SP needs a membership plugin that implements the correct and standard WordPress hooks. Most do bit every now and then...!

wishlist was stubborn.. and hard to customize... we want things done a certain way and they have very limited hooks/actions/filters for us to take complete control... they also obfuscate a lot of their code which as a developer irks us...
but most of all it was how they handled memberships... they really, really wanted a member to stay in the membership level when expired... we much prefer to change levels/groups when expiring to allow complete control... they seemed more for constantly renewing memberships..

Hi guys, sorry for late reply, I thought I was set to get notifications but wasn't. Thanks for the detailed replies. We've definitely struggled with the WP roles > forum permissions.
Tricky to change as quite a few things to integrate but I'll look first at the member plugins that work with our new Stripe/Quaderno payment gateway (s2Member and MemberPress) and remember to check on the correct set up for WP hooks (if you have had any feedback on those 2 plugins working or not with SP please do let me know).
Quaderno is the only service I've found that allows out of the box VAT management for digital services in the EU...buyer enters country and VAT number if they've got one, and correct VAT levels applied.
We're based in the UK...wish I didn't have Brexit implications to think about too!!
I'll let you know if I come up with a good system that works with SP.
I can tell you that we definitely have users utilising the S2member plugin. No sure about the other one though...
Perhaps we will get lucky. Perhaps the rest of the EU will suddenly get wise and reform itself into what it is supposed to be - and then we can cancel 'brexit'.
