what does gone missing mean?  were they deleted from server?  instead of showing up, there are image errors?  the html markup for them is gone?  or other?

When you say buddypress, do you mean the wp plugin and/or our plugin to integrate with the wp plugin?  if both, what is the share avatars with buddypress option in our setting set to?

Here are my settings... BY the way I did run into an out of memory error today and had to restore from backup so I want to make sure I don't run into that again.

dont understand... what does out of memory error have to do with needing to do a restore??

also, you didnt answer my questions...

has everyone uploaded a buddypress avatar?  you clearly have the settings set to display those instead of simple press avatars...

Users had loaded their avatars under different methods depending on when the uploaded them. Previous to this forum software being installed, after it was installed, and possibly after buddypress was installed.

The reason that I eventually had to do a restore is because the forums were causing OOM problems to the point that the site would not load and couldn't get to wp-admin. On the backend I was able to go in and just rename the simple-press directory to  effectively disabling it. Each time the plugins directory was renamed back the site failed to load because of apache segmentation faults. My host provider tech and I watched the logs and it was plain as day what was happening. Because this happened out of the blue mid day yesterday I decided to just do a restore from vault press and viola all is fine. Here is part of the conversation from the tech working on the issue. I am not saying that is is anything bad with your software but possibly something else that caused the forums to create these issues. Like I said after restore everything seems fine. But I did mess with the avatar settings:

Thank you for the update. I was awaiting for cPanel to login back in was able to trace this down to the forum software you are using. The Segmentation faults are occuring on forums urls. For example.

Several of these URLS are causing Apache to segfault with empty responses.

Is it possible for you to disable this plugin or software for further testing?

on the our buddypress avatar settings page there is a clear warning about how one set of settings could cause memory issues... if you did that, it could have caused it... but would have been much simpler to reset that (either in admin panel or db) rather than a full restore...

perhaps you want to keep the bp and sp avatars separate...  if you pick one over the other, then if uploaded via other methods, they wouldnt show...  that option allows you to settle in on only one avatar method (preference of most admins)...  but of course, best if done from day one or when telling users what is what..

Why does this exchange seem like such a struggle?

I understand that and I appreciate the help but I don't understand getting into the particulars of why I chose a particular resolution path as opposed to a different one. As i said I didn't (still don't) know that it was setting the avatars to use simple-press or buddypress. All I knew is that there was a massive issue and that something regarding URL's with the forum plugin was causing the issue. Not know ing what the exact issue was I restored from backup...

Anyway..... so if people uploaded through buddypress and some uploaded through wordpress then there likely isn't a way to get all users avatars to appear. If so I just need to relay that to my users.

I believe that is correct... you can either get them through buddypress or through simple press...  I think both of those are cable of getting wp avatars (sp is)... but probably not both...
