Social network that works with S:P?

I use Simple:Press on a membership site that I co-run with a partner. Looking for a "stickier" more Facebook-like social network platform for another membership site I started, I installed BuddyPress. I LOVE the social functionality (people can PM each other, comment on each other's walls, there's an ongoing activity stream showing what's going on in the entire site...), but the bbPress forums that supposedly sync with BuddyPress are AWFUL. They are so opaque and frustrating to use, they drove people away! Plus BuddyPress is incompatible with so many plugins and systems I use that it has become impossible.

Too bad, since it's a great concept, but BuddyPress has to go...

So I'm remodeling, and keep going back and forth about whether to use S:P, or try to find an alternative social network platform.

I've searched this forum to see if anyone has another social network platform that they've integrated with S:P but haven't found anything. Does anyone have a social network that they like? I really want to combine the best features of a social network, with the solid usability and searchability of a Simple:Press forum, but hours of searching have not uncovered anything.. I find it hard to believe that nobody has created this yet, but apparently they haven't...

There are certainly hosted solutions (Ning and the like), but I want to avoid "digital sharecropping" if I can. Plus I personally find Ning very confusing and non-intuitive.

Thanks for any advice/suggestions!

It would be nice if someone else can chip in with comments but I will throw in our 2 cents worth - although I have written this up before in the forums here.

We really do want to get some kind of communication together between BP and SP and it is a high priority goal. Our problem is that we have never used BP and know very little about it. Just installing it on a local test system doesn't really tell us much about it's capabilities and the way people use it.

We could really do with someone to step forward and help us out here. Coding would be perfect of course, but even someone who can advise, talk over design ideas, discuss what we can and can not do - what we should and should not consider and, of course, to help test anything that came out of it - would be a good start.

It would need - of course - a pretty thorough understanding of how BP works and does whatever it is it does. So if that person is reading this and fancies the challenge then please do send us a PM and introduce yourself.

Unfortunately, BuddyPress has so many plugin and theme incompatibilities that it's become impossible for me.

However, for anyone interested in this theme, WishList Member (which I'm using in my membership site remodel) has a brand new plugin for their "Insider" members, called WishList Tags, which brings a little bit of Facebook-like functionality to a WishList membership site, AND integrates with Simple:Press! People can tag others and include them in a conversation. Combined with the WP-Wall plugin, it will move my site closer to the kind of "sticky" social network structure I'm looking for.

I'm feeling much better about dumping a "Social Network" and using S:P in my remodel!
