SP website says newest version of SP requires WP 3.5 but on installation says it needs 3.6

Prior to downloading SP 5.3.3, the SP website said it will work with Wordpress 3.5 (I have 3.5.2). After downloading and attempting to activate in Plugins, I received a message saying that SP 5.3.3 needed Wordpress 3.6. The issue is that my new Wordpress site is currently in Preview mode and my WP developer advises not to update WP to 3.6 until the site is live. In the meantime, I do not want to go live without having the forum running. So, should I download an older version of Simple Press and, if I do, should I delete the 3.6 version that has already been downloaded to WP plugins? And why the contradiction?

contradiction?  Since SP 5.3, wp 3.6 has always been required...  The sp 5.2.x series worked with pre wp 3.6 versions...  and before upgrading, the required version is always reported as well as the compatible up to version...

Why would you wait until live to upgrade wp?  if something was go go wrong, better to find it before its live than after its live, no?  your call, of course...

If you want to downgrade your version of sp, you will either need the db from before the upgrade (you cannot 'downgrade' the db) or uninstall and then install the lower version...

Thanks for your quick reply Mr. Papa! Yes, my mistake--I see where 5.3.3 consistently has required 3.6 WP. My current developers (not me, since I have little knowledge of such things) are recommending being live before upgrading from Wordpress 3.5.2 to the newest version. My thoughts are similar to yours--they seem to believe that upgrading while in Preview Mode is more prone to causing issues--and have been very cautious about even bringing Plug ins in. Nonetheless, I have forged ahead by backing up the site and database to my desktop, then brining in Plug ins which have not caused any problems any way. I am wanting to do the same with the Upgrade--all is backed up now. Why not upgrade now, install Simple Press, and have the forum up and running on day one. Your thoughts? In other words, is there truly that much more risk of an issue when upgrading in Preview Mode?

Mark, afraid I dont know what preview mode is...   Is that something your host provides?  or a plugin via wp?

When building a Wordpress website, prior to being published and live on the web, the website is operable from the Preview mode to the administrator/developer. Some functionality is not as great as when live. But most of it should operate the same (such as internal links, menu, etc.)

but that functionality is not part of wp core... so was just curious as to what plugin was giving you that...

Oh, now that I think about it, it must be Go Daddy that provides the Preview mode. At the heart of the question is whether to upgrade now, prior to being live. I have read of a number of fairly serious issues that have occurred after a WP upgrade to 3.6. It only seems logical to deal with that now, rather than when my site, which provides my livelihood through sales, is live and crucial.

Cant offer much about preview mode, but I agree with your logic...  issues with wp 3.6?  havent heard of them, but with such a large installed database, certainly plausible...  Me, I always run out of wp trunk on my test sites... so I know long before a wp version is released if there is anything I need to handle...  have a duplicate test site for working on before live is much better than a preview mode...
