Hi,
I just upgraded my website to SSL. Most pages are working but the forum page doesn't show the padlock. I already updated the Forum Permalink to reflect the change. Is there something else I have to do? The website is http://www.ioniansailingguide.com

Hang on!
I just checked the site using Chrome. No problem with the forum page in that browser. Whatever is happening seems to be Browser specific. It's Safari 7.0.6 which isn't showing the padlock on the forum page.
Frankly, if it works in Chrome I'm fairly happy but cross browser would be nicer.

Hi again,
I'm still working on applying SSL to my site http://www.ioniansailingguide.com
Using Chrome to examine the site, the Forum pages are all showing the green padlock except for where I have two external links in the topics. I've tried to change the URL's to just // which has worked on most other problem pages but the text editor doesn't allow me to save it as such. The links always revert to http. Can you advise anyway around this?
To see exactly what I mean, the links are at Forum|Getting There|Corfu to Nidri
To put this all into context, I'm only using SSL because it's being asked for by Google rankings, there site doesn't have any sensitive information on it.

I can think of no convincing or sensible reason why Google should recommend that... Perhaps someone can enlighten me...
OK - first question. Are these existing links in posts made before you switched to SSL? Have you tried editing them? Old links in posts won't be changed automatically.
And - you never did answer my question at #2 above which may have a bearing.

Nevertheless, Google say that site rankings will be improved if they're SSL. It's quite well documented in webmaster tools.
Since switching to SSL I have tried editing the links several times and with the different editors which are available - plain text, HTML, BBcode. The result is always the same.
I changed to HTTPS within the WP general settings. I then added this code to the config.php:
if (isset($_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO']) && $_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_PROTO'] == 'https')
$_SERVER['HTTPS']='on';
It means nothing to me but it immediately worked for my host/website
Finally it was necessary to change one or two links within the X-theme which I use. The most problematic page was the one with Amazon Associates links but in the end, it just needed the src coding to reflect the https and all now works with the exception of the one Forum topic with an external link within it. I'm beginning to think that it's a function of the editor plugins because I tried using BBcode and Tnymce editors on other demo sites and they always seem to change URLs to HTTP rather than HTTPS regardless of what's typed into them - I may be wrong there but it's been my experience in the last couple of hours.

I have no problem adding a link to my test sites using https - actually adding links to your site...
The topic/posts that you refer to have two links. One is to an external site but the other is an internal link. Perhaps, while waiting for a greater authority than me to help out (Mr Papa who is away for a few days) it might be worth allowing for relative links to be used (TinyMCE Editor Options under admin Components).

late to the game and as Andy says on the road... but are you saying links inserted into posts have the wrong schema? we dont, of course, change the schema for posted links... this includes changing https to http...

Hi.
Thanks for coming into the conversation. May I revert to my core problem?
I’ve successfully changed my website http://www.ioniansailingguide.com to SSL in the last few days. It’s not easy for me because I don’t understand the details - I just try to follow other, more knowledgeable peoples instructions.
All pages now show the green padlock symbol, including the forum page but there is one exception. If you drill down to Forum | Getting There | Corfu to Nidri the green padlock changes to yellow which I understand to be due to the two external links in the post.
My real question is how do I keep the green padlock?
Reading the subject up led me to try to use relative links, i.e I tried to use //www.ktel…… but this didn’t work. In trying to do this I discovered that regardless of what I type in as links, they always seem to show up on the post as http://
Now that might be a red herring. As I say, I’m trying to achieve a fully SSL website and as somebody who doesn’t understand the technological side, I would appreciate any help that you can give me here.
regards
Peter
