For @mr-papa -
Peter does appear to be saying that if he inserts an https url into a post it gets changed to http. I can come up with no logical reason why this should be the case and I can certainly not replicate any such behaviour. Such behaviour really makes no sense at all. I can find no reason - anything you can think of?
He also seems to be suggesting that a post with an http link in it (when it should be https) removes the 'padlock' icon from the browser. I can't test this assertion without setting up an https test website but it seems an unlikely scenario to me. Why on earth would page content effect the display of that page's address bar! Bit again - if you have any ideas...?

will take more time later today (just back from week long business trip) and review the whole topic again...
but real quick, can think of no way for the https to get changed to http in a post... we certainly dont look for, filter or care about that... our post content is really just wp page content, so wondering if the ssl plugin the OP might be using is filtering content trying to changing links?
afraid I dont know what a browser uses determining a padlock - would have thought https schema and valid certificate...

You can see exactly what I mean if you visit http://www.ioniansailingguide......rum/travel
The padlock shows green until you click on either of the two posts, “Travelling & Transfers” or “Corfu to Nidri”. Either post changes the padlock to yellow with a little warning triangle ( in Chrome) on IOS X 10.9.4

understand what you are saying, but no clue on what any one browser or any browser uses as criteria for turning on a 'padlock'... and the warning - for example you dont get a warning triangle in FF...
