the OP appears to have been a confusion between digests and per post notification... you can have one or the other...
registered to receive email updates?? do you mean they subscribed? to a forum or topic? are digests in play?
please explain what you mean by use a gmail account to distribute the notifications? WP sends the email... do you just mean your main email account on the wp site (as set in the wp options) is a gmail account? or the sp email settings have a gmail account?
have the users checked their spam folders?
we have not had any issues with some emails sent or some not... any issues have been all or nothing and those were tracked to wp setup...
have you checked your server error log and email logs to see if the server is actually sending them? even if its a gmail account, the server sendmail or equivalent still has to send them - gmail would just be the account used...

To Clarify. Email notifications for persons subscribed to forums is not working correctly. I learned my lesson and shut off the digest option several months ago. I am using an SMTP plugin on WP to use a gmail account to send out the notifications for new content. That gmail account is also the default email in the SP settings.
The oddest part is when I send a test email for the SMTP plugin it goes through fine, but when I post test content to the site, my gmail account shows it is sending emails to 20 members when approximately 80 are subscribed to the forum I am posting the test content to. To make things even more fun, my personal email is one of the 20 that gmail shows it is sending an email to ( when I log into the gmail account I see the email has been sent to my account) but I never actually get the email.
My host if host gator. They have looked at my account and state nothing is wrong. I have experimented with the settings and even reinstalled the SMPT plugin and successfully sent a test email. I have duplicated this odd behavior several times.
does your server have any kind of email flood setting on it?
As we have warned previously (and long delayed supporting forum subscriptions for this reason) if you let folks subscribe to all messages from a forum, your server will be potentially sending a lot of emails... In your case, every post like the one you test, will require sending 80 emails all at once... for any kind of reasonably busy forum, that could be a huge amount of emails.. some servers will not support this...
may not be the case, but 20 seems like an odd/coincidental number and you say its consistently that number in testing... sounds potentially like some kind of server flood control setting... just a thought...
next troubleshooting might be to put some debug code in the subscriptions email notification routine and see if SP is telling WP to send all 80 emails...

I was using an SMTP plugin and sending through a gmail account.
Current setup: I am not using an SMTP plugin (it wasn't working correctly with either my gmail or ctsurrogate emails) and email through ctsurrogate.org server (hostgator).
*New Problem*
- my notification emails for new content for subscriptions are working, but they are not showing up in the Sent email folder as they did when I was using gmail. I have contacted Hostgator and they of course said to contact you.
- I have researched hostgator and they allow 500 emails an hour, which is something I can make work, since my boss requires all new content to be moderated, notification emails can be paced.
lol. not sure how they think we have anything to do with that...
the server sends the email, but no clue if gmail or any other mail client would know that an email was sent... Perhaps if everything was set up as imap, but this is smtp...
so short of your sent stuff, its working now?
