Support Forum
can you explain further?? we have thousands or tens of thousands of users using both, including us, with no issue..
if its an email not being received issue, I would look at wp since it sends the emails... many, many issues in wp support forums about wp not sending emails... normally, its on shared hosting but not always... wp by default sends emails from wordpress@yoursite.com... on many servers, if that email doesnt actually exist, it wont get sent... simple cure is to add a smtp plugin for wp, such as hgk smpt plugin...

I have the correct email set up via my host, I have an SMTP plugin, etc. The last time I was told that there was an issue on WP's end, it ended up being an SP component, so that's why I figured I'd ask here.
As it stands currently, members aren't receiving email notifications regarding subscriptions and watches. And, after checking further, I noticed that my subscription and watches read as zero (along the top of the of the forum, by "Members" and "Inbox", etc.) even though I'm subscribed to various forums/topics. Myself and my members are not receiving email notifications when they're tagged or PMd, either. I made sure to go into Options and enable email when receiving a PM, but that didn't do the trick. Overall, no SP notifications are being emailed.
Your issue with the new user email and turning off the SP version is not actually anything to do with email sending. That routine simply formats the email differently from the WP default. The routine in question uses what WordPress calls a 'pluggable' function which means it has the same name as an existing function and is simply used instead at run time. There can be many reasons for that system to break down - the most common being the use of something like a membership plugin that also wants to create a function with the same name performing the same task. But sending out the email? No. As we have said already - that is all pure WordPress.
The Subscription and Watches button at the top (and Inbox if you use PMs) do not and never have shown how many topics you are watching or are subscribed to. There really doesn't seem much point in doing that as you probably know those numbers. They show how many new posts have been made to topics that you are watching or are subscribed to hat you have not yet looked at. Which is kind of far more useful.
So back to sending out emails. In this case it sounds like Subscriptions and PM notification (I have no idea what you mean by 'tagged'). The only item in the email sending process that WP has influence over are the option settings on the Options > Email admin panel. By default all WP sent emails come from a fictitious 'wordpress@' address. Those email settings allow you to filter this out to be replaced by genuine values. If you have set these correctly - or you have the option to even use them turned off at the top - and emails are still not getting sent out then I would perhaps ask your hosting support if they know what might be happening to them.

Thank you for clarifying - I wasn't aware that that's how the Subscriptions and Watches buttons at the top displayed. However, there's still an issue. These buttons always display zero, regardless of the activity that goes on inside of the topics I'm subscribed to. The only thing that displays is the number of private messages in the inbox. (And by "tagged" I meant mentions.)
I'll go ahead and contact Dreamhost to see if they have any suggestions.
of course, any posts you make in subscribed topics wont appear in the number as you already 'know' about them...

Okay, an update. After deactivating and reactivating my SMTP plugin for the hundredth time, the issue finally went away! I'm now receiving email notices, daily digests, etc. After I announced this in my group, however, one of my members pointed out to me that they're not seeing any subscription options when they're in the forums. I logged in as a regular member and, sure enough, there are no heart/subscription icons under the Posts and Topics count. I went in and double-checked that these options were enabled for members. In Components>Subscriptions the option "Allow members to subscribe to forums in addition to topics" is indeed checked. Is there something I'm overlooking?
You will also need to make sure that the user groups in question have permissions (through their assigned permission sets) to use subscriptions. Check out permissions > manage permissions and open the appropriate sets that are in use and set accordingly. Should find the permission in the 'general' section.
