Support Forum
Please suggest how I can minimize dependence on volunteer moderators while still maintaining the quality of posts submitted to a Simple:Press community forum.
In the community forums, sometimes the loudest (longest) voices are the least desired. Too much noise and not enough signal makes for poor forum membership growth.
At present, each forum has its own volunteer moderators user group, so that individual moderators do not have moderator access to all forums. The idea here is to limit each volunteer moderator's scope of work to only one or two forums and to limit the collateral damage if a volunteer moderator's account is compromised.
Volunteers can be hard to find and easy to lose, so I'd like to allow community members to assist the volunteer moderators in maintaining the quality of posts. Something along the lines of an upvote/downvote capability would be a good start. I read the support topics at https://simple-press.com/suppo.....g-plug-in/ and https://simple-press.com/suppo.....type-site/.
Have there been any new developments along this line? Please let me know how I might best implement any available Simple:Press features and plugins to accomplish my objective.
Thanks.
on new plugin development, afraid not... deviations of the current post rating which allows up/down voting of posts and topics.. useful deviations, but not big demand for currently... could be custom plugin development though...
your moderator plan sounds typical and useful... is it not working for you? or just looking for more tools?

Yes, just looking for more tools and ideas. The moderator plan is good, but sometimes execution lags expectation. I'm hoping to find ways to improve the forum signal-to-noise ratio even when moderators aren't as active as planned.
I haven't looked into the reputation plugin yet. Might that be used with CSS to collapse or otherwise make less visible any posts from "low-reputation" members? Or likewise to use the current post rating with CSS in a similar way?
Any suggestions are welcome.
I am afraid I must be missing something here as @mr-papa appeared to understand what you are asking but I really don't. I have read both posts again and I am unsure of what you are wanting to do. Could you elaborate in a little more detail just what the issue is and what outcome you are seeking?

for spam posts and post moderation, I would recommend the admin bar plugin... easy way to moderate a site... and it features akismet for helping with spam...
yes, you could use the reputation plugin to hide posts from low rep users... by default, it includes built in the ability to highlight posts from high rep users or lowlight posts from low rep users... highlight/lowlight means to give the background of the posts a different color.. but but the reputation of each poster is readily available so css or other methods could be applied to hide a post... only issue with that is that the number of posts per page could be off as its post query...

Thanks, Mr. Papa. That gives me a direction to explore.
Yellow Swordfish, sorry for my lack of clarity. I'm looking for ways to make a forum somewhat "self-moderating" to lighten the dependency on volunteer moderators. The idea being to improve the quality of information in the forum as determined by users of the forum.
The specific problem I'm trying to mitigate is an overabundance of ranting posts that drown out more constructive posts in community discussions. Giving members a way to determine what is ranting and what is constructive by way of upvote/downvote or assigning a reputation to a poster will help with this.
Does that clarify my intent a bit better?
Thanks.
