I am not sure what to tell you here... if you want to stick with that wp theme that is loading that very old version of jquery and old version of jquery ui, you are going to have problems with any plugin that expects to get the current versions that come with wp...
the theme seems to have some custom jquery and ui stuff that requires the old versions of jquery and ui... but that very old jquery and jquery ui conflict with the versions that come with wp... and thus any plugin that uses the wp jquery and jquery ui are going to have problems... for example that 1.5.2 version of jquery was released over 2 1/2 years ago, so the theme is not really up to date... that is a very long time in computer software... and jquery and jquery ui have undergone significant changes since those versions too...
so the old versions are causing serious issues on your site with simple press... not talking about the background image here, that may not be related... but multiple forum functions are not working because of the jquery and jquery problems...
think we need to see what the theme author says...

I can finally confirm that the culprit was the theme all along. It pulled outdated versions of jQuery and jQueryUI from Google's hosted libraries, which resulted in some plugins and SP not functioning properly.
It seems as though most good developers include jQuery straight from WordPress when they enqueue it, so it shouldn't be an issue for most people. I was one of the unlucky ones with a theme which evidently slipped through the seller's quality control net.
I'd like to thank Mr Papa for his time over the last week, and as a token of my appreciation I will be purchasing a full year's subscription of SP after the initial two months. It is an excellent plugin and the support has been admirable.
thanks for the kind words...
some themes get away with this because the more simple plugins dont use jquery very heavily... but display heavy plugins like simple press make extensive use of jquery... and really, plugins can only test their stuff with the jquery and jquery ui that come with wp... trying to test with every incarnation of jquery would be quite painful...
