I am using the forum for a photography critique site. I have the thumbnails set to 500 pixels. However, the color in the thumbnails is substantially less vibrant than the true image (like if I click on the mouse and the image enlarges, it's a completely better image). Is there a way to change the compression or whatever is happening that diminishes the quality of the picture?
the thumbnail quality is set to 80%... that just appears to be a left over from the previous tool we used... if you could try editing the file uploader plugin, file library/sp-plupload-config.php and change the thumb quality to 99 and see if that helps...
if it does, we can either make that permanent or make the field available on the upload options panel...

I noticed you made a modification to this so we can choose the quality of the thumbnail - thank you! The color is still significantly different on some thumbnails (when the image is enlarged, it looks way different than the thumbnail). I can send you a login and post link to see what I mean if you'd like. Is there a way to just resize the image without changing the color?
Wow - I didn't even know myself we had this feature!
I can only talk about the art of resizing images and whatever method you use they will always lose quality and the colours will always be resampled and compromised. Some tools are better at it than others of course. photoshop is pretty damn good but that is what you pay for. PHP can hardly compete with that.
Having said that I have not myself noticed anything dire about the thumbnails. Do you have an example?

at this point, need Andy to weigh in as he is the graphics dude here... perhaps the GD tools just cannot handle it properly... thats about the best we can assume is on all servers...
