okay, back where i started after my restore.
i changed themes and it had no effect.
there is no tinymce appearing even when that is activated and the post field is just un-clickable. title field works fine.
if i de-activate the tinymce, the field works fine.
i deactivated ALL wordpress plugins and had no change.
i did not deactivate simple:press. my only option for simple:press is deactivate or edit .It says in red "Simple:Press is READY TO BE REMOVED. When you deactivate it ALL DATA WILL BE DELETED"
also, i cannot update themes or plugins without manually uploading/overwriting via ftp. when i click "update"
the wordpress updater says "you have the most up to date version" (even though wordpress and simple:press tells me other wise and I know i do not.)
could this be becuase it is partially "uninstalled" and ready to be removed? maybe that is the source of my issue?
i like this layout with the smileys in the bar...my layout has the smileys on the bottom...(and the submit reply button is far below that...i know its a poor user experience, because i can't find the submit button myself sometimes!...)
Thanks for any and all help.
Let's deal with this install/activate issue first. There are two ways to uninstall SP. From the WP plugins list using the 'Uninstall' option and then deactivating (which is exactly what the red message states) - or by setting the Uninstall check box in the forum admin Toolbox. I would suggest you go to the Toolbox Uninstall panel and turn this off.
Also - just before I forget, the smileys etc., below the editor can be turned into the toolbar using the Integrated Editor Toolbar option on the admin - global display settings panel.
The message 'Error establishing a database connection' is a WordPress message that will be displayed when, literally, the database can not be accessed. There can be many reasons for this to happen, mostly temporary, intermittent server hiccups of some kind. But I can think of none that might be connected to activating plugins or themes.
The most common and usual reasons for not seeing the editor are (a) scripting conflicts associated with a theme or plugin mis-loading components and not using the WP API to do so - most commonly jQuery and/or the jQuery UI. Or (b) another plugin adding items to the tinyMCE editor that are intended for use within the WP Admin (ie., post creation) but are coded in such a way that they load or half load on the front end as well.
This codex article explains the first issue and what to look for. The second potential problem you will know of if you have any such WP plugins active.
We are always willing to take a look at the site to see if we can see anything that may be incorrect or likely to cause such conflicts.

In my own case with this problem, it was that custom buttons were added to TinyMCE by the theme, which were hooked into "init". Changed the hook to "admin_init" and everything is working fine.
@Mr Papa, you'll see the solution updated on the theme's support forum (same link as earlier in this thread). Thank you for the help.
good news... unfortunately when wp changed the api, suspect many didnt realize...
nice work by your theme guy btw... love it when they actually support it!

Thank you for your assistance. However, I was unable to get back to this forum or the website for the last few weeks, so the problem remained open.
I have seen other issues on the forum with TinyMCE, but those solutions didn't work for me. My problem is not unique to any WP Theme. Whenever I have the TinyMCE plugin turned on, the title area works, but the post area does not. (it is visible, but cannot be clicked on or used. the Tiny MCE never appears, either)
The forum is private, but if someone is willing to take a look, I will happily provide access. Thank you in advance for your help (and for your previous attempts)
I'm also noticing the "add reply" button does not work at all. I can "add topic" and "edit posts" but not add reply. (this is even with the TinyMCE plugin deactivated....another thing I broke trying to fix it?)
(note: i was able to make the "add reply" button work again by turning off the "text wrap" "syntax highlighting" and "force paragraph" options in simple-press. those were the only things i had changed. not sure why it affects it.)
I have been trying to get this editor to work for some time. I have twice paid for the 2 month membership and each time I make attempts I break my themes (in wordpress AND in simple-press.) Eventually, I will have to face that it is not worth the time or the money. It's just that I know it should be fixable....
