When a topic is edited or a comment added to it, the title appears in the top menu (along with the Options set in WordPress).
How do I prevent this?

Thanks - that did the trick. By the way, I noticed that the contextual help on that page does not cover the correct subjects (e.g. no help for Filter WP List Pages).
