How can I display topic thumbnails next to each topic posted in a forum ?
Pulled from either the first image, or letting users select an image.

Not automatically... Though we do have a ticket to consider something along those lines...

Where can I find that ticket? Also any estimation on when this could be done?

I will check but I am 99% sure we do not give public access to 'future plan' tickets. And being future plans we have no ETA either. These tend to get discussed at the start of each development cycle so I can say that this is not slated for 5.5.1
