We've set topics to sort by most recent postings in the "Forum View Formatting" and all of our forums, except for one are doing that (pinned topics first and then by most recent postings).
Is there somewhere else this can be set on a forum by forum basis? I'm not sure how I can get this rogue forum to conform. In this forum there are 2 pinned topics at the top, then topics are sorted oldest posts first - so the opposite of what we want.
I'm using 5.2.2 under WordPress 3.5.1

There is a 'reverse sort' option within the popup forum tools at topic level. Is it possible - or perhaps it does seem likely - that this has been used at some stage and reversed the default setting?

I saw that, but that's just for posts within a topic is it not? I'm looking at topics within a forum.
The forums are order to our setting within the admin, then topics are generally sorted newest to oldest (except for this one forum) and within the topics all posts are sorted oldest to newest.
If there were forum tools one level higher that would be exactly what I'm looking for.
Do you know what the DB entry for the sorting is? If I turn off the option to sort newest first all the other forums switch to oldest first, while this forum switches to newest first. Is this option toggling something and somehow this one forum is out of sync?

It is the odd tool out. While it shows up for an individual topic it does actually change the sort order of the forum. On the posts tools you will find one to sort the posts. So this is the one you want. And note -= it is named 'reverse sort this forum'...
