Hello,
In the upper right corner, there is the
"# topics with unread posts" and then two icons
next to that text. Does that # refer to the number
of unread posts the YOU (logged in user) have not read or is it the
number of unread posts not opened at all (by any member of
the forums)? Just trying to clear up some confusion.
Is it also my understanding that the forum refreshes every
hour so any stats that have been enabled would change
every hour?
Thank you for your help.
Ok. It seems that the # of unread posts
decreases after an hour without my having
read even one of them. One of my clients brought
this issue to my attention. My client noted that this
did not seem to be a problem on the 4.x versions
of the software. Did something changed or could
I possibly have the software incorrectly set-up?
well, as we have explained many times (probably should add it to the faq), its unread posts since your last visit... after a period of inactivity, you will time out and the last visit time gets updated... so the post may not be new since that last time visit...
and this operates the same in 4.x and 5.x...

yes, technically its unread posts since your last visit... after a time logged in with no activity, your last visit is reset...
we have looked at multiple ways of trying to make it a true unread type thing but all just grind the system to a halt because you have to store and load a lot of db information...
as always, if anyone can suggest a scheme that does not cause an undue burden on the system, we are all ears...

What is this time frame and where might it be modified?

Thanks for the info! That would explain why we have members complaining that their unread count is changing without them doing anything.
