Support Forum
Greetings. When deleting a forum from the Admin, we are presented with the message:
IMPORTANT: Be patient. For busy forums this action can take some time
Just how long is reasonable to wait for Forums with 9,500+ topics and 127,000+ posts?
I tried to delete a forum with just 13 topics, but I still have the "Please wait..." message the next morning, after about 10 hours, and the forum still exists. With no Cancel button, I wonder how long I should let this run, or if there is a way to cancel the process without harm. Do I just close the window?
Would it be better to use the db pruning plugin?
The only entry in the SP Error Log for this time frame that I don't recognize is:
27 July 2014 10:00 pm | spaErrNotice | 527 | php
file: /simple-press/sp-api/sp-api-cache.php
line: 113
function: unserialize
Notice | unserialize() [function.unserialize]: Error at offset 145 of 149 bytes
Not sure if that is of any relevance, just providing as much data as I can...
Thanks in advance for any input!

thats a simple notice and not a player...
unfortunately, deleting a large forum takes considerable time and resources... we do have an open ticket to try to optimize this process... 10 hours is certainly more than I would expect (magnitude more)... the process is likely dying off from cpu time exceeded or memory...
yes, the pruning plugin should make it more since you can do it in chunks...

The forum I first attempted to delete only had 13 topics.

I gave that a shot but had no pruning options. After selecting the date and just two forums. I only got "Error - no forum(s) specified for filtering!" There was also no button and no action after selecting a date, until I entered a date and hit enter.
Does the current plugin version require SP v.5.5? The update is next on my list, but I was going to do some cleanup first...
Thanks! It's always these five minute jobs that tend to open the proverbial cans of worms!

well, if only 13 topics, then something else at play... no issue doing that... sounds more like a conflict or something interfering with the process... we have done thousands of topics...
can you try again? this time with the browser console open.. and see what the httpxml request responses are?

For whatever reason, I was able to delete two forums this time!
Both times, the "Please Wait" notice never went away. On the second one I grabbed a screenshot of the console, with what looks like one warning highlighted for your reference. Then it looked like admin-ajax.php just kept running, and running...
Anyway, thanks again!
Still curious about that Prune DB plugin version question. Do all current plugin versions require 5.5?

On the console front those are not errors (assuming that the one highlighted has a red background because you were hovering the mouse cursor over it) - they are just a list of all the http requests and responses being made. You should be able to filter the list somewhere to only show actual errors... That cuts out all the 'admin-ajax.php' calls being displayed for example...
Now - I have to say I do not remember the 'Prune' plugin being updated but it does say in the header that it requires Simple:Press version 5.5 and above so the answer to that I am afraid does appear to be yes.
As Steve said above - we do have a planned development to do something about deleting forums as we know things can timeout on big forums at the moment. One of the issues here is that another planned development - to the Subscriptions plugin - really has to be done first and I will be honest and say we have been putting that off a little as it is scary! And probably now too late for the planned 5.5.1 which has to coincide with WordPress 4 now in beta. It is one of the few tasks left that we hoped to include but is looking doubtful and may well end up being the first thing we do for a 5.5.2. I apologise for that of course. We are getting there as fast as we can...
