Happy new Year Simple:Press community!

This is my first 2016 question for you :

Currently i've permalinks on topics that include also the forum prefix ( ex: forums/<forum-name>/2179/#p2963 )

But i need to be free to move different users post between sections without get 404 page , so is there a way to remove forum name part from the url? If yes, how?

P.S. would be nice however to keep "old" url with forum name still valid ( expecially for pinned ) since they are vastly used everywhere in our site. I cannot change all of them...

still 2015 here! 😉

not sure I understand what you want to do... move posts between sections??  do you want to move posts to different forums or topics?  that is supported...  but it is a move, not copy...

so not sure what you really want to do, but if it involves removing the forum name from the permalink, afraid that is not possible...

Sorry maybe I haven't been much clear.

I know I'm able to move topic between forum, and it's exactly what I've to do... But i need a static url that doesn't change when I move topics.. isn't it possible ? Aren't postid unique? Why is forum name essential in URL?

IMHO An URL to a topic prefixed by forum name can generate a lot of problem ( 404 etc. ) with referrers after you move it to another forum or just change the forum name itself.

The forum name is not necessarily essential in the url but it is very popular and in the early days of SP - when we only used IDs - we were constantly being asked to switch to the current permalink structure. That is not going to change.

We could certainly look into creating a redirect plugin which might be a worthwhile endeavour. Or we could also look at adding a forum ID permalink plugin like the current one for topic ID. That shouldn't be too hard and is, if I recall correctly, still supported. Although the latter would not, I suppose, resolve your problem.

Sorry but i didn't understand.

I'll try to summarize my request:

Isn't there any way to have an url with only topic id specification currently? ( as a permalink or just query , such as ?p=topicid   )

We move topics between forums very often for moderation and forum "restructuring"...

There is no way to specify a URL that does not contain the forum slug - as I said above. If you ever want to change just the topic slug component of a url to be the id then there IS a plugin that will do that for you. But it wont help a move to a different parent forum.

As I said above - what you actually need if you move topics to a different parent forum is some sort of redirect. I have opened a topic here for us to discuss the implications and whether it is easily achievable.

Ok for redirects, could be a solution for permalinks

But wouldn't be a faster alternative to allow a simple: http://mysite.com/forum/?t=topicid ... same way of wordpress with its posts , or phpbb with its topics https://www.phpbb.com/communit.....;t=2335426 ( as you can see we've the forum query var "f=", but if you remove it and leave only "t=" it works the same way )

Maybe this strategy can be done with query vars or with permalinks on simple:press too. But IMHO it's an odd decision to "lock" topic urls on a specific forum, since it's a very common pratice having topics that links to other topics , move topics around and rename forums ( expecially for big communities ).

I am very disappointed by this lack of simple press.

Auto-Redirects from old url after moving are good, but if , for a special reason, i've to move a specific topic or rename forum multiple times, there will be a lot of redirections ( slowing down things) and you could have some conflicts that should be considered ( ex: A -> B ->A )

Well I think I already covered why the permalinks are the way they are - and they DO follow WordPress standards for pages.

Now let me ask a question. When you move topics from one forum to another are you changing the topic title or slug?

Could be possible we can change title to "moderate" some not regular title of course.

@yellow-swordfish i think that a query version of the url as "fallback" is also a must-have . It's ok to have "discorsive" permalinks for topics ( for SEO ) , but it's also an imperative stuff having an url with ids imho.

However i dunno which solution you'll develop. But i've to say you something ofc: you cannot pretend that in an environment where all people ( out of control ) can share something, they will do in the correct section and with correct title. They can share those (not regular) topics on social networks ... but we must be free to moderate ( move topics and change their title ) without lost linkage on 3rd party sites ( it's even worst that having ids instead permalinks for SEO ).

It's just a suggestion

we understand your points, even if more of an edge case... and have opened a ticket and discussion on the topic...  its highly unlikely we would go back to ugly permalinks... discussion centering around a built in (could be core or plugin) mechanism for handling redirects when you move a topic or post...  but we must discuss much more first...
