Unread Post Count - seems to be a problem

I've noticed a small problem. After reading a post then going back to the top to click on TOPICS WITH UNREAD POSTS it hasn't counted down by one and you are left with it saying one unread post when clicking on it it says no unread posts.

Any ideas?

Well I guess @mr-papa won this debate!

This was my argument: When you open a topic with a new/unread post in it you have not yet actually read it. That is still to be done. So the count should not be reduced. Only when moving on to the next action should the count reflect that as the 'reading' is now in the past and has happened. This seemed correct and obvious to me and logically of course, it is correct.

My colleague disagreed and said that it would just confuse people 🙂 And we can probably deal with it although technically it is tricky and might be a bit messy.

Leaving aside the confusion - we were rather happy with the implementation and added accuracy and functionality. It would be nice for someone to tell us what they think of that aspect if you have a moment,

All I can say is our users don't like it much and, actually, it doesn't seem particularly logical to me.

Thanks for the answer though.

Do you mean your users don't like being able to click on the button to take them to the first recent unread post in a topic? That's a shame - we thought it was pretty good! And so many people have asked for it in the past.

Or do you mean that your users really are contacting you to tell you they are confused by the count at the top? I know you said you were but are they actually making noises? Either way - that will be changed.

That's good news - yes, our users prefer it how it was.

Thanks very much for that! Assume next release?

Yes.
But I would like to pursue this preference.
Previous to this enhancement, clicking on a new post link would have taken them to the last post in a topic regardless of whether they had read posts previous to the last one or not - causing them to hunt for the real starting point of unreads.
Now you can be taken to the exact point in a topic that has been read up to and positioned on the forst genuinely unread post - no matter where it is or on what page.
Why is that not better?

more discussions on our end to occur as stated before... but we are likely to keep it going to the first unread post in the topic - only make sense and now possible...  would not make sense if there was 20 unread posts in topic to only go to last page... that improvement will remain...

but we will see if we can determine if when the page is loaded, the entire topic can be marked read (and update the count)...

of course, if a flurry of opposing views came in, it might remain...:)
