As it happens, I did disable all the plugins yesterday (apart from SP) and it still happened. If I think of anything else that might be causing it I'll let you know.

Please yes. The 'new posts' list is calculated on each page load. Try clearing it out and logging out completely. Then log back in and see if you can see the conditions under which is goes askew.
