Overall everything seemed to work well, here was my experience.

Thought I'd share the stats so you know what size forum was updated.

Forum Stats: Groups: 1, Forums: 16, Topics: 679, Posts: 7722
Membership: There are 236 Members. There have been 38 Guests, There are 2 Admins

On refreshing the plugins page after deleting the simple-forum folder.
The plugin simple-forum/sf-control.php has been deactivated due to an error: Plugin file does not exist.

I then activated the plugin, I ticked the convert to V5, and received the Upgrade completed notification.

Custom Icons Folder showed as Write-denied
Location: /wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/custom

Pop up information said it was available in Components > Custom Icons Panel, this isn't showing under Components. I don't have any with this install so I can't check if it would have moved them if I had any.

Found Custom Icons under Forums it said:
Sorry, uploads disabled! Storage location does not exist or is not writable. Please see forum - integration - storage locations to correct

I then created:
sp-resources/forum-custom-icons

No error in Forums>Custom Icons still no Components > Custom Icons

In the Storage Location I have:
Plugins Folder: wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins

Is that different then the:
wp-content/plugins/forum-plugins

Went to Available Plugins and received this error:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function curl_init() in S:\localsites\gaiantarotcircletst\wp-content\plugins\simple-press\sp-startup\admin\spa-admin-updater.php on line 13

Should I change this location to /plugins/forum-plugins

Same with Themes:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function curl_init() in S:\localsites\gaiantarotcircletst\wp-content\plugins\simple-press\sp-startup\admin\spa-admin-updater.php on line 13

I now have inside wp-content for Simple Press:
forum-file-uploads
forum-image-uploads
forum-media-uploads
forum-smileys
sp-resources

Inside sp-resources I have:

forum-avatar-pool
forum-avatars
forum-badges
forum-custom-icons
forum-language
forum-plugins
forum-policies
forum-themes

Inside plugins I have:
simple-press
forum-themes
forum-plugins

Error log shows:
September 28, 2011
8:23 am    php    file: /simple-press/admin/panel-toolbox/forms/spa-toolbox-environment-form.php
line: 64
function: Unavailable
Warning | Invalid argument supplied for foreach()
September 28, 2011
8:17 am    php    file: /simple-press/admin/panel-forums/support/spa-forums-prepare.php
line: 242
function: Unavailable
Warning | opendir(S:\localsites\gaiantarotcircletst/wp-content/plugins/simple-forum/styles/icons/default/custom/) [function.opendir]: failed to open dir: No such file or directory

So I'm just not sure on the plugins and the themes. I'd like to check out the blog linking plugin, and I noticed that all our tags are gone. Will they return with the activation of the tag plugin?

Is there anything else you'd like me to try? I can of course redo this entire upgrade process at anytime (now).

I'll try a clean install tonight.

Shari,

To clean up folder wp-content it was decided the default folders you were used to in SP4xx would be placed in sp-resources. But this is up to you. You can have those directories in any folder you choose. Just make sure your storage locations in your SP panel reflect that. You may create those folders if they don't exist, and they must be writable.

So the ones listed in the Storage Location are the same as those that I installed?

Plugins Folder:

wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins = wp-content/plugins/forum-plugins

As SP will be auto upgraded, is there a best practice for these folders? Or however you want it is fine?

I confess I may of skimmed your post quicker then I should, but time was short.

You should NOT have your SP plugins within WP's plugin folder as WP itself may try to load them.

Otherwise you can pretty much place the folders where you wish, as long as the paths in your SP storage locations match the actual location. Auto upgrade shouldn't matter as the locations are mapped to the storage locations you selected.

in current version 4.4.x, we ended up having a whole bunch of forum folders at the wp-content level... kind of sloppy really... so with 5.0, we decided, by default, to create an sp-resources folder in wp-content and create any subdirs we need there... a whole lot tidier...

as Lee said, we offered an option to convert the 4.4.5 structure to the new 5.0 structure... but its not required and if you have uploads its really not suggested since it wont be able to find those when the posts are displayed...

and, again as Lee said, you can pretty much locate theme where you want from wp-content except the plugins dir since WP will scan them and try to make them wp plugins...

I'm somewhat confused based on https://simple-press.com/suppo.....-svn-info/

"they would be check out to wp-content/forum-plugins and wp-content/forum-themes,"

Both the forum-plugins & the forum-themes were to be put into wp-content? Which is what I did.

So is that incorrect, and it's "better" if they are located in the sp-resources folder?

As they are separate from the main plugin, a person is putting them in manually. Where should they be placed?

Yes I understand on the copied over directories, the images one can't be moved or it would break all the current links, I'm trying to understand the proper installation location for the plugins & themes.

I listed everything as this is Alpha, and I wanted you to know what had been done during installation of the upgrade, and imho it did exactly what it should have done. Move what could be moved and left alone those items that needed to be.

My "problem" is that the instructions say to put the plugin and themes in one location, yet it creates a different location. I don't have an issue moving them, and understand that I could just change the directory link in the storage location, however again as this is Alpha, what is it you want the structure to be? If it's inside the sp-resources, then that needs to be the instruction on installation. If it isn't then why is it creating those folders? I don't think where ever is really a great idea 😉 This is going to cause confusion in the long run, "well your plugins might be here or here"; always better to have a "location", for the standard intallation.

Again, I'm not complaining, this is what I can offer to the party; I don't code, but I can try things out, and hopefully help you to understand what you might be facing when JoanQpublic is attempting this, and have some idea of whats happening that may cause confusion down the pike. I know this is Alpha so I understand I am moving things or it's not going to function fully, etc. I'm just trying to understand the proper standard location for these two folders.

Thanks!

those instructions were valid at the launch of the alpha... they have been circumvented since then... A PM was sent at the time about some updates, but that might have been after you signed up too...

and frankly, we said once before that we would update that topic, but failed to do so...  and that's on us... we really need to do it and have bubbled it to the top of my list for this weekend...

I dont know that one is better than another... really just user preference... we have got flak in the past for having too many of our directories in wp-content and confusing users...  so the default now is all our stuff under sp-resources, but thats really more for new installs...

and removing the option for storage locations wont file either...  too many folks wanted and insisted on being able to move them where they wanted...  so its hear to stay...

we do appreciate the feedback!! and understand the confusion...  that too is part of being in an alpha... things will change as the alpha progresses...  the code is not considered stable...

whew... so,  I guess on to some recommendations...  embarassedsurprisedcool

for an upgrade, I would just leave everything where it was before (assuming they were in wp-content and not in simple-forum) and let the forums and themes be under sp-resources/forum-themes and sp-resources/forum-plugins... that is what we have done here too...

for a new install, I would locate everything under sp-resources...
