Ok let me start out by saying that Steve has most probably gone off to sleep now and I see the problem with the link he gave and have to say that I am really not sure where the link was supposed to point to but I will try and find out.
However - let's see if we can talk you through this.
At some point in the past you created a custom SP theme and called it 'my theme'. I do not know why you did this but it is possible it was because of a WP theme conflict that needed to be dealt with and by making a custom theme instead of editing one of the supplied themes it meant changes would be preserved on future updates.
As Steve said right at the start, WP - in it's 3.6 release - annoyingly made changes to the dialog (the popup we use) that required extra styling be put in place in our supplied themes. This meant that any one using a custom theme would not get those changes automatically and would need to make those changes manually. The link to the codex article he sent you detailed exactly what those changes are (along with other, optional changes... note a document like this is available after every new SP release).
Now - you mist have made your custom theme for a reason. So by abandoning that and using spDefault (out of the box) you are also abandoning any customised code or special styling that was made to your own 'my theme' and obviously deemed necessary at some point in the past.
So - we know that applying the popup dialog changes described in the SP 5.3.0 changes document will solve the initial reported issue with popups. We do not know if it solves the problem with your title - which might have been the original reason for creating the custom theme in the first place. Only you know why you made it.

I made the custom theme for the sole purpose of expanding interlinear spacing, which felt too tight to me, and made the forums hard to read. I copied the default theme and the only change I made was to the CSS, to widen the space between the lines.
At some point that change to the CSS stopped working (probably with a Simple:Press update) so I gave up trying, and eventually forgot I was using a custom theme.
Then I switched to the "shades of grey" overlay and found the font used in that theme much easier to read than with the default overlay I'd been using before. I totally forgot about the fact that I was using a custom SP theme, since it was no different (in the way it was displaying, at least) from the default theme.

understand... every release we do, we put a page out on the codex that details any changes we made to the core themes in case custom theme users want to make the same changes... 99% of the time, the changes are not required... however, in this case, the change that WP made to core will make it a change that a lot of users will need... unfortunately, still beholding to the masters...
to fix the genesis title issues, you will need to make a change to the theme so may want to go back to a custom theme... otherwise your changes get overwritten on updates...

Thanks, Mr Papa -- understood. I do have a question though. I DID make a custom theme, and had problems that went away when I switched to the latest Default theme (though I'm still having the other problem, of course).
How do I apply theme updates to a custom theme??? Do have to create a new custom theme each time there's a theme update that affects functionality? And if so, how does having a custom theme make things any better than using a regular theme and re-creating any custom changes??
Thanks,
Melissa
No... once you create your custom theme, you should never have to do it again...
And 99% of the time, you will not have to apply any theme changes we might make to our themes... we did provide them in case users want to, but we go to painstaking trouble to make sure any changes we make to simple press core will not break any current in use custom themes...
note, I did not say 100% because sometimes its just unavoidable... in this case, it was not one of our changes... WP updated to a major new version of jquery UI and tweaked the WP jquery ui css... and the result was it could break some of our stuff... so the theme updates become needed...
also, sometimes we release new functionality... if you want to use the new functionality (ie new template tags) then you would have to edit your theme to take advantage of those template functions..
but if you are just as happy as can be with your forum and the css, you will rarely have to update your theme if we do our job..
