I see that whatever is the cause is basically stopping jQuery from running. Which then stops some of the buttons from working. And judging by the error, it simply looks like some kind of malformed anchor href argument, At least that is what it seems to imply as I have not seen that before.
I really have no idea. probably need to talk to Steve who is not around at the moment, About the only constructive idea I can think of would be to deactivate plugins one by one to see if one of them is the cause. But from what I remember i think you are more or less running the same things we are running here with the exception of BuddyPress. But worth a try,

Ok, do you mean the simple press plugins? Or all the plugins? I'll start with all sp and work toward all wp as well.
One thing that makes me wonder is that our forum name begins with a hashtag '#' not sure.. I'll play around and update this thread with anything I find that seems useful.
Here's the fix for anyone with Avada theme:
https://theme-fusion.com/knowl.....atibility/
Edit: And I've confirmed that this fix works. So if you are running Avada, wait until they release 3.9.4 before upgrading your wordpress to 4.5, or else you have to manually copy the files from the link above into your theme directory.
good work... thanks for the info...

If it is not this problem with Avada then the only way we could help diagnose your problem would be with the site up and running. There are no known issues with adding/editing posts and, as you witness yourself, it is working fine on this site using the same code as you have.
But the first question that always has to be asked in these circumstances is - was anything else updated other than WordPress -> 4.5 and Simple:Press -> 5.6.5 ? When these buttons fail to work it is always down to a scripting conflict of some kind that is killing the running of scripts on your site. This usually means that all component updates need to be reviewed - WordPress theme - other WordPress plugins etc.

Wordpress and Simple:Press were both updated as were associated plugins and themes.
That produced the problem so we asked the Host to restore from backup.
Subsequently, we attempted JUST the Wordpress update which yielded the exact same result. No 'New Topic' and no 'Reply' functionality.
Have no idea how to progress - we were forced to restore again!
So if you updated no other components one possibility is something you are running now that is incompatible with WordPress 4.5. Is it possible to have a link to your forum page. At least I can look to see if there is anything really obvious or known I can spot.
