Updating WP to v3.9.1 went smoothly for all plugins except Simple:Press.
I was running SP v5.4.1 under WP v3.8.1 before the WP update. Upon updating SP it installed and activated OK, but when attempting the final step to update the Forum itself it failed with an "Upgrade aborted" message (for Build 11023 to Build 11296). This was followed by a blue "Internal Server Error" message, leaving the build at 11023, as follows:
Upgrade Aborted
current build: 11023
Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.
Please contact the server administrator at XXXXXX to inform them of the time this error occurred, and the actions you performed just before this error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log.
Additionally, a 500 Internal Server Error error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
I've done many checks etc such as:
- Checked Apache server, PHP and MySQL versions, and they're all current.
- Checked PHP memory is adequate (96MB)
- Checked the .htaccess file is OK.
- Updated MemberPress to Developer Vn 1.1.5 (WP 3.9.1 compatible) - MemberPress 'controls' Simple:Press.
- deactivated then reactivated various WP plugins.
I am now at a complete loss. Unless advised otherwise I'll have to roll everything back to WP v3.81 as it was on Saturday.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance ,
Bob
so any more info in your server error logs?? 500 server error logs usually record them... like running out of memory or cpu...
also, any caching plugins? some of them are corrupting ajax responses in the admin...
do you know how to look at the console in your browser? if so, see if any more info provided in the http response to the install...

Thanks Mr Papa.
I don't use any caching plugins.
Via cPanel, I can't find any 500 error logs. The Error Log is completely empty - do I need to configure the log in advance to set it up?
I've looked at the console on the page where the update fails and see this next to the single error flag, which I don't understand:
Does this help?
Aaah,
I did find this as the most recent entry in the error log of the site. There are many similar ones with different IP addresses prior to it on the same date.
Prior to these on 25th and 26th May there are no errors since 28th April.
[26-May-2014 12:56:29 UTC] WordPress database error Unknown column 'display' in 'field list' for query INSERT INTO wp_sftrack
(trackuserid, trackname, forum_id, topic_id, trackdate, pageview, device, display) VALUES

Helpful or not?
at the moment, I wouldnt worry about the last error since things are not setup yet...
but the error in post #3 is concerning... that is not from simple press... and something is creeping into the ajax response of our install (it shouldnt of course)...
it appears you have some caching or script minifying or concatenation plugin (or theme) that is mucking it up... do you know of such a plugin?

Mr Papa,
Has anybody told you that you are a STAR!! If not, I'll shout it out right now
Your Post #5 set me thinking and I reviewed my notes of Saturday when I first started getting '500 Server Errors' following my update of WP from 3.8.1 to 3.9.1.
The initial problem occured after updating the 1st of 19 WP Plugins, which was "AskApache Debug Viewer" to v3.0. That update went OK, but the 2nd one (updating "Dropdown Menu Widget") failed with a '500 Server Error'.
I just now deactivated both of those plugins and, lo and behold, the SP update to v5.4.2 performed perfectly!! My site is now up & running again.
I won't activate those two plugins as they're non-essential.
I'll inform the authors of both of those plugins (I suspect it's "AskApache Debug Viewer") so they can review their code.
Many thanks indeed for your rapid responses and your help with this, it's very much appreciated.
Kind regards, Bob
glad we could help get you back up and running! thanks for the update...
