Afraid I don’t know what to say. I have used this code myself and just retested. How about the removal of the old block. Are you sure you did not remove more than you should have. Believe me – there is no problem with this. Somewhere you are missing an opening brace…

Including the line above the changed block and the line below and to the end of the function it should now look like this:

I found the problem thanks to the example you sent.  

Somehow I must have clipped this – ” spdb_query(“ALTER TABLE “.SFROLES.” CHANGE role_actions role_auths longtext”);

After putting it back I was able to perform the upgrade.  And it looks like everything is intact.  I’ll check it out thoroughly in the morning, but I think this problem is solved.  Thanks again for all your help and patience.

Ok, there are problems still.  No one except admins can see the forums.  Everyone else gets:

• The requested group does not exist or you do not have permission to view it.
• Unread and recently updated topics.
• There were no topics found.

I’ve tried re-setting the permissions.  Then went to one of the user groups to be sure it had members and it does. Then went to one of the forums and added that User Group.  No change.

Tried re-setting the Auths cache.  No change.

I’m afraid to keep trying stuff for fear that I will just make matters worse and never be able to find my way back…

have you checked the forums individually to ensure that the user group / permission set assignments are in place and all correct?

I only set it up on one of the Forums so I could see if it worked.  Sometimes SP is counter-intuitive to me so I may have done something wrong, but the user group/permission set assignments for that one forum look correct to me.

check your sfauths table in the db…  any chance some of the auths are duplicated?

I don’t know how to tell.  I’ve looked at the DB and there are over 900 entries in that table.  There are no duplicate auth_id’s as far as I can tell.  However for auth_name and auth_description there look to be about 25 for each.  Does that help?

over 900! ??? Well that is almost certainly the problem there.
I have the PM but need to do some thinking and testing first to work out how we can get that table back to the proper condition…

at this point, I would probably go to forum – permissions – reset permissions and choose to reset all your permissions..  this will reset them back to the default install state…

should get them fixed, but you will need to go back to forum – permissions – manage permissions and set them back up the way you wanted…

Doesn’t look like that worked.  I reset the permisssions.  Then I went to a Forum that is open to all Members (General FARA Membership Forum) Add Group Permission, chose FARA Members for “Select usergroup” and Standard Access for “Select permission set.  Then signed in with a different browser as a FARA Member and I get the same messages: “The requested group does not exist or you do not have permission to view it”, etc.

No I don’t think this is the solution by itself. I believe that before this is done the sfauths table needs to be reduced to a single set of entries. When that is done then a reset makes sense. At least that s what I believe. But I donlt believe we have a single tool that can reduce all of your duplicate entries.

What would a single set of entries look like?  I can go in there and clean it out if I know what to remove.

The bottom line is that you need one entry of each auth type. There IS a definitive list of the core auths but SP plugins can add extra ones so the final list will depend upon which plugins you have active.

What might be sensible here is if you tell me what plugins you have active and I can then create a SQL script to re-create your auths table as it should be. I assume you are comfortable with running a SQL script against your database.

Following that you would then need to perform the ‘rest’ of all auths, rebuild those relationships in your forums and clear out the auth caches but that comes afterwards.
