Why would you need to? Just swap in the old backup database...
Also is there anything I can do to prevent the permissions issue prior to upgrading?
Did you have to install simple press 4.3.5 on an old version of wordpress because at the moment it is taking a long time to install.
No _ I don't really see the point. if you install this all you are going to do is delete it again to replace it with the V5 plugin. The only thing that matters is the database. V5.4.1 of SP and the old V4 database - then upgrade.

Hi everything worked well. Only one issue now. The inbox button still shows 0 even though there are messages in there any idea of a fix for this?

All fields for attachment id still have null as a value but the messages are in the new table

attachment_id will be null as I said before. It is supposed to bre null until you start using and including attachments which you could not do in V4.
As to the inbox count - do you mean you know that you had unread PMs but the count is zero?

I have no unread pm's I thought it showed the inbox quantity not quantity of unread messages.

Ah no - same as it always was - a notification that you have new, unread messages.
