Just got a very quick response from Wishlist confirming role does not change if you move a member to a new level.
So...I installed the plugin I linked to above, and that solves the problem. Thanks again for all the advice...

Not solved yet unfortunately.
With the plugin installed, if I change a member's membership level, their WP role is updated, as shown in WP Dashoard > Users > All Users.
For some reason the role isn't updated in Forum > Users > Member Information. If I manually map users it does update. Otherwise it doesn't.
I've got a directory on the site too. Permissions on this are based on roles too. This does seem to update automatically.
Not sure what's happening now...

Well - as I said yesterday - role changes in WordPress are picked up by Simple:Press because a hook is fired (message is broadcast) and we can run our code on receipt of the message. Sounds to me that it is likely this plugin you have found does not fire the standard WordPress hook/send the message. And if that is the case it just means Simple:Press is never informed of the role change. And that is not good and frankly, bad plugin writing.
