Users getting booted to home page on post/edit

For quite a while now (it started before the 5 upgrade) some of my users have been experiencing issues when posting, replying or editing their posts, after hitting the

I've been trying for a long time to narrow down what may be causing the problem but so far have found nothing in common with the people that this happens to.

It DOES seem to be limited to certain topics, though it can also happen with a brand new topic as well.

Here's what I know:

  • It's not browser specific, can happen on IE, Firefox or Chrome
  • It's not operating system specific, can happen on Mac or PC
  • It's not plugin related, I've disabled all WP & SP plugins and the problem remains
  • It can happen on new post, reply or edit
  • It seems to occur fairly consistent in some topics but can also happen with a brand new topic
  • It seems to be related to longer posts, a short 1-2 sentence post seems to go through ok
  • There don't have to be links or smilies or any kind of code or attachment, a long text-only post can still create problems
  • When trying to edit an existing post after being dumped to the home page after trying to save (the post doesn't save) I noticed the address will be http://websiteaddy.com/#postnumber
  • Some people appear to never have problems, and even in some of the problem threads some people post without issue, others consistently cannot post in those threads (except very short posts)

If I think of anything else I'll add it

ETA: I don't know if it might be in some way connected to this problem, while this problem only has a visible issue when using IE I guess it's possible there's still something going on but just not visible in other browsers.

wow.going to have to read this one a few times through just to get the drift! wink

nothing comes to mind and definitely a unique report...  it does look like you might still be caching objects with w3tc?  not sure if that could be related or not...  we dont use urls of that structure nor do we have redirects to the home page...

do you run mod_security?  or anything that would be doing something with longer query args?

mod_security is definitely worth looking into. We did have one user whose host had applied mod-security that even checked the content of POST variables which was the first time I had heard it could do that...

My host doesn't run some kind of plugin security I believe, I'll ask them if that could be the problem

With the address example I gave I should have pointed out that what is happening is that for some reason the forum part of the URL is being dropped and that's why the user ends up on the home page. Eg what should be sitename.com/forums/topic#topicnumber becomes sitename.com/#topicnumber after trying to edit the post and getting booted to the home page. For a new post/reply there's no topic number at the end of the home page url

weird, just looked at my original post and I clearly did something whacky and missed half a sentence LOL sorry.

should have been "after hitting the Submit Reply button" but I'm sure you figured that out by now LOL.

Just something new I've learned, it may actually be related the the TinyMCE plugin issue I'm having, if users change their editor then clear cache it seems to let them post ok.
