Previously, the WP dashboard widget would display links to unread topics/threads in Simple:Press. However, after upgrading to v5, the forum stats are displayed, but it never shows if there are unread topics. I have to go to the actual forum page to see if there are unread threads. I use the forum primarily as a private area for the blog writers to communicate, and it adds an extra step for writers if they have to go to the forum just to see if there are any updates. Has the dashboard widget's functionality been reduced or is there an option I need to change to get this working again?
I read this post and it mirrors some of the issues I have had with the post bag. While the post bag does show unread posts in the WP dashboard, I have to mark them as read which is an extra annoying step. I miss how I used to be able to see the unread posts and having it automatically marked as read in pre-v5.
Also, can non-admin's see the postbag? Again, I would really like a way that non-admins could see new posts on the forum from within their WP dashboard. As it is, most of the other writers on my blog (who are not admins) resort to following the forum RSS because the unread topics cannot be seen from within the dashboard and they often forget about checking the forum manually.
Any suggestions on how I can return the unread list to how it used to work would be greatly appreciated.
first, if you are not an admin, you are shown the unread list in the dashboard...
second, if you are not moderating posts, you dont have to approve anything... simply visiting the topic (you or moderator) will remove it from the postbag...

I know this is a rather old topic, but your comment here is relative to this issue a member brought up:
The list of Forums activity is no longer displayed in their dashboard. I do recall seeing a list of Forums activity in the dashboard, and I found the Admin Bar setting for showing that, but only Admins see it.
All members used to see a list of recent forum topic activity in their dashboard, not just admins. That is gone now, and I can't find any setting to get it to show for non-admins.
Am I missing something?
Please feel free to move to a new topic if warranted.
Thanks!

We actually removed it for all except Admins which is what was supposed to happen but we had always missed the fact that it showed up for all. It really is an Admin tool and certainly was not subject to the usual and standard permissions and checks.
It is probably unusual for anyone to allow their users to see the WP dashboard - most people seem desperate to disallow it! We could consider putting something back there but it would need fresh, new code to do so.

Thank you for the clarification, and for confirming I'm not (that) crazy!
