Oh - also try deactivating the SP Admin Bar plugin temporarily...

Turning auto update off means I can now see and use the pop-up Tools menu.

However, I still can't use the "View" button in the new posts menu and users still can't login, post or reply.

I have added the code to the wp-config.php file as suggested.

Just got the message about the admin bar and I have deactivated it.

I can now log in at the front end (so I assume ordinary users can too), and reply and post.

Everything seems to be normal - except for not having the admin bar, of course.

I will keep checking during the day for a permanent solution.

Thanks

Well - can you now first turn the auto-update back on and again - make sure you update the form. If all stays good then turn back on the admin bar and let's see what happens...

It all seems to be working fine again.  Wish I knew exactly what had gone wrong but happy to take the result and plough on.  Thanks for all your help.

I think the default values for the autoUpdate options had somewhere been lost. No idea why but it fit the conditions. Glad it's all back on track. You should now be able to one by one reverse the changes we made along the way

I foolishly removed the "scripts debug" code and It all went back to the same problem as before.  It's back in and working again.  Is there any problem with leaving it in there?  Hope not.

There may be a small performance hit. It is most odd that the compressed version is perhaps the issue. Perhaps I was wrong at the start when you asked about reinstalling... perhaps you do have a corrupted file there. If this IS the case then we are only talking about the admin bar plugin files. If you want to download that again and overwrite the current admin bar plugin files then it might be worth a try. There are no inherent or known problems in the scripts within that plugin - we use it here for example! But a corruption is a remote bit real possibility...
