Hi,
I have been using simple:press 4.4 for a while and recently set up the most recent version on a new site and I'm pretty lost. Wondering if you can help...
1. It seems new posts are being held for moderation. How do I change that? I have been clicking around in permissions for hours and can't find the setting.
2. Where can I access my posts that are currently being held? I can't find them either?
3. How do I set things so that when a new post comes in I get sent an email and what email address will it be sent to? For some reason I get some messages sent to the account I used when I set up the blog, and others are coming to my current admin address and I'm confused as to why they are being split up like that and what address/user is the master address for new user notifications, etc.
Thanks for your help.
how moderation works has not changed in many, many versions... you can control who has posts that needs moderation by controlling permissions... a faq on the permissions: http://wiki.simple-press.com/f.....rmissions/
you can approve or delete posts that are in moderation via the forum tools (was also in 4.4) or via the admin bar... the admin bar was in 4.4 but is now available via a plugin for sp... get it from our plugins download page...
with the admin bar plugin you can also choose to receive an email on each post that is made to your site... the email will go to the email address in the profile of the sp admin user... do you have other admins or moderator? each can choose to get emails or not...

Hi,
Thanks for the help. I found the permission setting you were talking about but I can't find my posts that are waiting for moderation or the place to change my settings so I get an email whenever a new post is posted. I don't see anything called "forum tools" or "tools" I see toolbox, but there is nothing there that seems to apply. Can you just walk me through the step by step on how to find these please? Thank you.
I'm also a little lost by what you are referring to when you say admin bar? I just see the right sidebar from within wordpress. Sorry, I'm pretty lost. And where do I find plugins? I feel like I'm missing something.
to get plugins for simple press, go to our downloads page - you can find the link in our nav menu at top... on that page will be a link to the plugins download page... the admin bar is a special area above the user info area at the top of each forum page for performing moderation activities... We had it long before wp decided to add an admin bar so could be potentially confusing now...
the forum tools have been around for long time to... they are not 'activated' differently in 5.0 than previous...
in forum view (the list of topics in a forum), when you hover over a topic row, the forum tools icon will appear in the upper left of the row... clicking on it will bring up a list of things you can do...
in topic view (the list of posts in a topic), which is what you really want for moderating a post, when you hover over a post row, the forum tools icon will appear in the upper left of the row... clicking on it will bring up a list of things you can do including approve or delete a post in moderation...

Thanks for the quick reply. I think we need to start over because I'm not following. I do have an older version but I found everything to be pretty intuitive and the default settings did most of what I wanted, but I'm not having that experience now and I think the assumption that I understand because things are the same as 4.4 is throwing me off.
I had my permissions set to hold posts for moderation because that was the default. Now I can't find any of them.
If I understand you correctly you are saying to go to my forum, then hover over a topic that has a posts being held and then an icon appears in the left hand side. I should click that and I will find the posts being held for moderation?
I did that and I see a "tool set" icon appear, but it doesn't show many any options for posts being held for moderation. I also have no idea what topics people left the questions on because for some reason it's not sending me email notifications even though I have it set to. But I do know people have been posting because I have asked people to do so.
Isn't there some kind of a place where I can see all posts being held for moderation, much like the new posts page? I'm totally confused.
I'm also wondering why I can't get the notifications I need?
One other thing... I just realized that no where am I seeing the option to set things so that when someone creates an account that "standard" settings automatically apply. In other words how do I tell the system to grant "standard access" to all new "members". I have spent 30 minutes digging around and just can't find it.
how posts go into moderation has not changed. the permissions for setting that up are identical as before.
how did you previously moderate or see the posts held in moderation? there was two ways previously... one was via the admin bar... the only difference now being that the admin bar is a plugin for sp where as it was part of core previously... so if you administered them via the admin bar which appears at the top of forum pages, you will need the admin bar...
I also previously mentioned that getting new posts modifications is now part of the admin bar plugin too... so if you got them before, just get the admin bar plugin for sp and you will start getting them again...
we moved some functionality from core to plugins because core was getting extremely heavy (weighed in at nearly 3 MB!)... we tried to only move functionality that not everyone was using... so you did not need all the extra code if you were not using the functionality...
you said you were seeing the forum tools... what type of page were you on? as mentioned, you can get it on the forum view (list of topics within a forum) and on topic view (list of posts within a topic)... if you want to moderate posts, you need to be on topic view and hover over the post that is in moderation, click on the forum tools and you can approve the post... if you activate the forum tools on a post that is not in moderation, obviously you wont be offered that option...
moderating posts in moderation via the forum tools is for onesy twosy type moderations since you have to be on the post needing moderation...
the admin bar plugin is the preferred method of moderating posts because it displays ALL posts in moderation (as well as unread posts for you) in a single list and allows you to quickly and easily take care of them...

re new members... go to forum - options - member settings... and you can configure the default usergroup for new members based on the wp setting you have for wp role for new users...

I did see that, but all it's giving me the option of doing is giving new members status as members, guests or moderators.
But when I go to permissions it lets me set up what I want "standard access" to mean, but i am not seeing any place that allows me to tell the system to give "standard access" to the "members" group. Does that make sense? How do I do that.
Not sure what you mean by "you can configure the default usergroup for new members based on the wp setting you have for wp role for new users.."

I never moderated posts in the past because they have always been set to automatically approve. Something I can't seem to get it to do now no matter how much I play with it. It's obviously something I'm missing, but i don't how to fix this. I guess I'll have to get the plugin, because I don't know what topic people posted in because I never got the email notifications. Seems to be working now after I re-saved it. But it wasn't working previously for some reason.
