yes, I had read that and have looked at those options, but again, it's just setting people as a member. Where am I defining the permissions for members? In other words I want a member to have "standard access". I go to permissions and I only see a way to define what standard access IS, but not who gets it. I go to usergropups and I can set new members to be "members" but not define what kind of access they have. That make sense? That link doesn't seem to cover it.
I go to user groups and I see "guests", 'members" and "moderators". I click on edit user group and there is nothing there about granting that user group a particular access. I also click on "add members" and see only a single member which obviously isn't right so something is set wrong somewhere.
How do I grant a particular access to a particular user group?
did you read all the pages in that controlling access section?
in there it tells you how to marry up a permission set (ie standard access) with a usergroup (ie members) for a forum (in http://codex.simple-press.com/.....rmissions/)...
so for a forum where you want members to have standard access, edit the forum (can also set up defaults for the group) and edit the permissions and assign the members usergroup with the standard access permission set to that forum... save and its set up... repeat for each forum, or as mentioned above, set the default permissions for the group so any new forums get this relationship...

Yes, i did, and I just read it again. It says you need to do it, but I don't see it saying how to do it. There are no graphics like in the post you linked to either. I go to usergroups and there are no options other than to select a bade or change the groups name.I go to permission sets and there re plenty of options for the each access type, but nothing that allows me to sync or set a particular access type to a usergroup.
Just dug around and it looks like it is under forums >> "Add Global Permission Set". I was looking under the main usergroups and permission set tab, not under forum. I added a new permission set so that members had standard access. i don't see this change reflected anywhere. Is there somewhere I can look to make sure my "members" have "standard access"?
I only changed the global settings. Should this take care of it?
I just tested the site by leaving a comment and it's still sending it to moderation, even though under "standard access" I have it set to bypass all moderation. How is that possible?
yes, if you want to apply that same permission set and usergroup to all forums...
comment?? do you mean a post reply? so you set bypass post moderation to true AND you set bypass post moderation once to true? just checking because as detailed in the codex, both have to be set for no moderation...
were you a user or a guest? if the latter, what permission set and usergroup (default is guests) did you apply to the forum for guests? guests are not members...

Yes, sorry, I meant post. I only had the bypass all ticked. I didn't take the instructions to mean that both needed to be. I thought one would over write the other. Hopefully I have it fixed now.
One last question (hopefully), I am seeing a capthca and a math equation when I try and create an account. Is there a way to turn off the math equation when creating an account?
the math question is a permission, as is the captcha... disable the one you dont want... math question is spam prevention permission...

I got two messages that are awaiting moderation.
I dont see where the moderation queue is on the dashboard as per your comments above.
If I log on to the forum as SiteAdmin, I can see the two comments with the text 'awaiting moderation' - but no buttons to actually approve. If I log on as the user that I just created with moderate privilege - I dont even see the two posts awaiting moderation. I have skimmed through you doc and links above - but where am I going wrong?
OK - I found a workaround for anyone else who has similar issues. Log on as site admin and reply to the thread awaiting moderation. Assuming you got the option turned on, this will automatically approve the topic for display - you can then delete the admin post.
However, I am still curious why I cant do this with the admin bar plug-in. According the documentation, "When an admin has the display admin bar option turned on he will be shown which posts in the forum that are unread, need moderation or is marked as spam.
When clicking on the View New posts button and a list of each post will be shown where you can mark as read, delete, create a quick reply or go to the topic in the forum."
