So just stick /forum/ in the W3 TC setting for Never cache the following pages on page cache? That will stop caching for the forum and all groups and topics?
I think you have to tackle this fondness for borders 1 px at a time. Take it slow. I have confidence you can overcome any withdrawal symptoms.

yes. if you have multiple cache types, pages, db, etc, there is a place to say not cache for each cache type... there is not a global, single location...

Actually, just page cache, minify cache, and database cache. A page exclusion wouldn't apply to object cache and browser cache, and it's not there. I made those changes, so if I ever make a post with a link to that forum that's not working for you, just let me know. I can chase down the forum software guys
