first, you would not need to change any theme templates to use the hooks discussed above... those would simply go in your spFunctions.php file or in a sp-user-functions.php file located in the wp content directory... but, yes, would require some php code to use the standard type actions/filters...
we dont consider it a problem here as we intend for it to track any member using the forum or store... we dont see any bot registrations here (or very few if any), but do get users who download the core forum plugin and use bogus name info (account required)...
That said, I can see some value in your request... might be an edge case (not used by the large majority) but still can see the use case... might be best as an add on plugin to keep core bloat to minimum (not a simple check on the option you mention)... or maybe even core... but will open a ticket for consideration...

Hi, I have the impression, that the new "hide members from user statistics" might be the result of your consideration of my request above. At least it should solve my request. Thanks for your effort anyhow.
I have set the new "hide members" checkmark in the admin panel for a certain usergroup, that has no duplicate usergroup assignment.
So I expected, that the counter in the statistics at the bottom of the forum, would have decreased accordingly.
Unfortunately, nothing happend. Do I miss oder missunderstand something with this new function?
I assume you mean the total members count? As it said in the blog post it was designed...
to hide members in specific user groups from the new user list and top posters statistics
It could change the total membership count but it's a fairly expensive query to execute. It can be custom changed as well as there is a filter available on the stats query.
