lol. thanks for the help, but its really not generally necessary... for you and the other couple having this issue, would be nice to understand the underlying problem because wp oembed does NOT require you to do that... nor do we since we just pass it along to wp... and except for these couple rare occurrences, its not a problem...
so would be nice to know what is going on in the environment... does it occur with default wp theme? what about with other plugins deactivated?

I haven't had the time to try subbing out the themes and toggling plugins but I am happy with the html option, at least for now. If there is a better fix though please do post it. If I have a sec to toggle plugins and themes I'll let you know as well.
