When I click on 'View New Posts' nothing happens and even when I view a post directly it still does not update the number of posts showing as unread or needing moderation.  This was working previously so I don't know what is blocking it now.

so something must have changed?  theme update? plugin updates?

but sounds like a js conflict...  see:  http://codex.simple-press.com/.....-conflict/

with the browser console open, try again and see what the ajax response is...

do you have a link?

well. of course only admins and mods can use/see the postbag, so cannot try it with that link...

did you try it with the browser console open?  you would certainly see either js errors or an ajax response...

if you to pm me a temp wp admin account with sp admin capabilities, I could take a look...

well, your site is throwing 500 errors when trying to use the postbag...

unfortunately, those are hard to discern because not much info is given... and its an internal server error

GET http://www.driffieldcyclingclu...../index.php?...ar-newposts&sfnonce=d076b6bea8&rnd=1381940152668
500 Internal Server Error

so has the post bag worked in the past?  or is just being used now?

any chance you are running mod_security or other security plugin that might be blocking the ajax requests?

please check the server error logs for any more info on the error...

The post bag has been working in the past but no longer does.  I don't have any security plugins running that I am aware of, but as I gave you temp logins details perhaps you might be able to see if there are any that would cause a conflict???  I would appreciate any help you can give me on this because I only have limited knowledge so need things explaining in simple terms.  Many thanks,

so what changed on the server?  would be a good place to start...

mod_security is not a wp plugin... but something at the server level and is a module for apache...

Hi,

This issue is still unresolved and I would appreciate any help you can give me to sort it out.  I have not had chance to look at it recently, but want to get it off my to do list.  I'm afraid I do not understand the technical terminology you have used.  All I know is that this was working, is no longer, and nothing has been changed on the website apart from the usual updates.

Please can you tell me where to go next?

Well - assuming the situation has not changed from the above and if this is still being caused by your server throwing code 500 errors then to be honest you should probably be talking to your host because that does usually point to a server set-up error or conflict of some kind. These sort of errors can not really be diagnosed remotely like this - it needs access to log files etc., that are on your server.

The basic principle that was stated above however, does apply. When something works and then stops working it is always going to be because something changed. And that really does mean always. This might be - in terms of a WordPress based site - changes to any WP theme or WP plugins in use - or new plugins being added to the site. But it can mean changes to the server environment etc.

However - before contacting your host then checking with the script console as suggested would be worth a try in case it shows something useful. All modern browsers these days come with a console - usually from tool or development menus. These can be opened and set to ONLY show script Errors. Once set then loading a forum page and clicking on the admin bar button will show in the console window both the request to the server and the response. And if an error this will be stated. That information would be useful whether for us to try and help or for your host.
