Did you set the permission to bypass math question for users in question?? That would be how to 'turn off'. ' remember that permission sets and user groups applied to forums control access including who has to answer the math question.

So after not requiring math question for users, does the captcha function properly?

The forum software worked perfectly before I started to add plugins.

So I not only deactivated the plugins but removed them from the server.

Here is what I am presently dealing with:

Forum has two copies on same screen.  One has a gray background.  Below it is the correct theme and the same material meaning forum/topics and notes.

In either copy of any particular message you can Quote the message to leave another message but in all cases a math equation is displayed.

Answering the math question does not allow a submission of the new addendum .. the submit page is not highlighted.

Need help ..

two copies.. sounds like plugin or theme doing odd things... but we can normally handle... go to forum - integration - page and permalink...  the section called theme display options...  play with the display multiple, display in loop and strict wp api options...  should be able to get rid of second one...

do you want the math question?  or the captcha?  does seem to make a lot of sense to have both...  but lets get display down to one then tackle that...

thank you for your reply.  Unfortunately, the solutions rendered did not work.

Instead, I just replaced the bad software with an entire backup version and all problems ceased.

The math now works.  This version did not have any Captcha or any of the SP plugins activated.

I will not try them on at a time and pray for the best.

The original install of the Subscription and Captcha plugs produced Warning Errors and Fatal Errors.  I do believe this was the origin of the problems.
