I tried using the facebook button on the topic area and it pulled a picture from the footer, I enabled the buttons on individual posts and clicked on the facebook button on the first post and it pulled the picture from the second post, any ideas?

are you using a plugin to handle the facebook OG stuff??  OG = open graph...   it helps facebook with images...  otherwise facebook just kind of randomly pulls one...

several of the seo plugins do it (ie all in one seo and wp seo) as well as jetpack...
